This summer, the popularity of womens espadrilles has
skyrocketed. These simple shoes – canvas, rope, and laces – have been seen in
magazines, on TV, and on the streets. It’s not hard to see why – this
lightweight footwear is a stylish way to keep your feet cool during the hot
summer. Despite their popularity, the story behind espadrilles isn’t
well-known. Like any other type of shoe, there is a rich history behind the
shoe, reaching as far back as the 1300s!
Espadrilles were first created in the Pyrenees. While the
exact date of creation is unknown, they have at least been around since the 14th
century. In fact, you can find shops in Spain that have been making espadrilles
for over a century! The original version of the espadrilles featured canvas
uppers stitched to the rope soles at the sides. Some were made with laces that
would be wrapped around the ankles and tied to keep the shoes on securely.
They first gained worldwide popularity in the 1940s. They
grew so popular that Lauren Bacall wore them in the film Key Largo. Today, espadrilles can be found everywhere. Often worn
as an alternative to sneakers or other types of warm-weather footwear,
espadrilles are viewed as comfortable and cool shoes.
